"It'll take years to sort this out. What was he trying to do?" says the young cadet.

"Over here." says the grizzled old investigator. He points to a corner of the room, where the body lies, its hand still stretched up toward a chalkboard. The cop puffs a cigar and shakes his head. "Looks like he almost had it."

The cadet reads what the man died to figure out: "Thank you for the watch and fayves." He scrunches up his eyebrows and looks back at the senior detective. "What does it mean?"

"We'll never know." The old man whispers as smoke envelops his head.
